6Nan Bei Dumpling & Tea Bar

5 out of 5 (Based on 74 Facebook reviews)

Top 6? Surely top 5 right? Well, I sat staring at my computer for over an hour and I came to the startling conclusion…I can’t do it. I can’t choose between which of my favourites to drop, so I won’t do it, sue me.

It’s no secret that one of my top foodie spots in Newcastle is the Grainger market. It’s packed wall to wall with independent food stalls from artisan baked goods to some of the best Turkish food you’ll try.

But the one place you can’t afford to miss is the Nan Bei Dumpling & Tea Bar. They serve up some of the best dumplings I’ve ever tried and are hugely popular with everyone I’ve spoken to.

The pork & cabbage and chicken & mushroom dumplings were my favourites, but I’m yet to try the whole menu. They serve up a selection of dumpling, noodles & soup, steamed stuffed buns and teas.

5Meet and treat Newcastle

4.9 out of 5 (Based 190 Facebook reviews)

It might be surprising to see that none of our top 6 are in China Town on Stowell Street (If you disagree comment your favourites below!). Well, number 5 is on Bath Lane and only a 1 minute walk away from China Town.

Meet and Treat is a casual Pan Asian cafe, serving up an amazing selection of Taiwanese, Filipino and Korean style dishes to name a few. It’s a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of a day’s shopping in town. The relaxed environment is surrounded by unique wall art, eclectic furniture and is the perfect place to spend breakfast or your lunch break.

On our visit the pork katsu noodles were outstanding and there really wasn’t much on the menu that we didn’t want to try.

4Liu dining

5 out of 5 (Based on 134 TripAdvisor reviews)

Located on the Newcastle quayside, Liu Dining is the most highly rated Chinese restaurant in Newcastle on TripAdvisor. Although a little more expensive than other venues, the location and quality are incredible. We visited recently on the recommendation of a friend and thoroughly enjoyed the mixed seafood starter and lamb hot pot main.

Being a stones throw from the quayside makes Liu Dining ideal for a full night out, with incredible food and some of the best bars in town all in one place!

3Hei Hei

4.5 out of 5 (Based on 539 TripAdvisor reviews)

Hei Hei might not be the most highly rated by others on our list, but it more than doubles the number of reviews of any other restaurant.

The first time I visited Hei Hei, they had an English menu and a Chinese menu. Naturally, I had to check out the Chinese menu and ended up trying a seafood soup starter and a whole salt and pepper crab main. It was easily one of the best meals I’ve ever had and I’ve never been disappointed on any return visit. They’ve now combined the English and Chinese menus into one, offering a massive variety of dishes. I’ve yet to try anything there I don’t like.

The service is impeccable, food authentic & varied and the atmosphere is incredibly welcoming. Hei Hei is easily one of my favourite restaurants in Newcastle and if you haven’t had the chance to visit yet, I can’t recommend it enough.

2La Yuan

4.6 out of 5 (Based on 117 Google reviews)

It was a tough call choosing between my top 2 and it really wasn’t an easy choice.

Well number 2 is another stones throw from China Town on Gallowgate, but couldn’t be further from the all-you-can-eat buffets that have become the norm.

La Yuan serves up authentic Sichuan cuisine in a modern, stylish environment. Their menu is packed full of enticing dishes from across the region and has an eye-opening tea menu to match!

My personal favourites were the Gung Bao Chicken and Hung Shiao Pork Belly. In fact, I now regularly make the pork belly dish to impress dinner guests, but still can’t get close to La Yuan’s.

As I say, the spot for the top 2 was a hard call, but La Yuan is one of the best in town for authentic Chinese food and is well worth a visit.

1Thai House Cafe

4.7 out of 5 (Based on 145 Google reviews)

When I worked in Newcastle, Thai House Cafe was one of my beloved lunchtime spots and easily one of the most authentic places I’ve eaten. They put almost every other Thai restaurants in town to shame.

It wasn’t long after my honeymoon to Thailand that I first visited this cafe and it was the only place I found that even remotely lived up to the real deal.

Another causal cafe, this one is found right next to the 02 Academy on Clayton Street and serves up an incredible selection of dishes at very reasonable prices.

Check out some of their best dishes below and their Facebook page for their mouth-watering platters. This really is one every lover of Thai cuisine NEEDS to visit. You might think I have a bias towards smaller, casual restaurants based on this list, but I find it’s where the most authentic dishes, friendly service, and unmatched passion can be found…and Thai House Cafe is undoubtedly no exception.
